The Doctor is wise. :) As is Steven Moffat.
Since I came across this on Tumblr, I thought it only fair to post it on Tumblr. But if you want to give me letters, please leave them as comments on my blog. Thank you!
And now, for something less serious, but also very important…
The trailer for BRAVE, the upcoming film from Pixar, which also happens to be the first Pixar movie with a female protagonist.
I know, right? No, it can’t be! Except it is. Even Wall-E identified as a boy, even though that was a movie about what should have been genderless robots. :)
I can’t wait for this movie. It looks awesome. I’ve already watched the trailer a billion times, and it gives me chills!
Also, if this were a live-action movie, the protagonist would totally be played by Caitlin Blackwood from Doctor Who. Just sayin’. :)

Sadly, it’s been reported today that Elisabeth Sladen, Sarah Jane Smith on Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, passed away today at the age of 63.
I thought it appropriate to post this here as a memorial, as she was the first truly feminist presence on Doctor Who, despite the wonderful companions before her or since. She was a brilliant actress, capturing nuances in Sarah Jane’s character that someone less talented might have missed. She was gorgeous. From what I hear from those who’ve met her, she was kind. And I know that Whovians everywhere will miss her.
I’m particularly saddened by this, because she was the one classic Who companion I ever cared about meeting. She was the one I wanted to look in the face and tell her she was brilliant, because I was so impressed with her work. I’m sorry I never got to do that. I’m hoping that, wherever she is, she knows that anyway.
RIP Elisabeth Sladen.

So, I’m playing Rory in the DoctorWhoRPG here on Tumblr! :) 1) because I love Rory, and 2) because I wanted to see if I could get into the head of a male character and 3) he’s an interesting male character in that he has such an alpha female for a wife.
We’ll see how this goes! If you’re a Doctor Who fan, they’re still looking for more characters. Rory, Amy, Jenny (The Doctor’s Daughter), and Sally Sparrow are taken so far, but there’s plenty more to be played!

Honestly, I could care less about Game of Thrones. I’ve never read the books, as I’m not really a broadsword/dragon kind of a girl, and Lord of the Rings makes me go “meh.” But as a sci-fi/fantasy fan from way back, I took offense to this review of the upcoming Game of Thrones series on HBO. And it’s written by a woman, no less! It bothers me when women “speak for the group” when it comes to culture, as if women think en masse. I recently had a good female friend tell me, in response to my positive review of Sucker Punch, that “I‘m sorry, but other than girls who read comic books (and I don’t think the girls in this movie did), I don’t know any who would choose to escape into a fantasy where they’re beaten-up strippers/samurai warriors with large guns.”
First of all, “girls who read comic books” or enjoy SFF are more than you probably think. And secondly, there’s the assumption that all women think the same way. Regardless of whether a woman is a fan of such things, who’s to say that something like this wouldn’t speak to a woman. Who says that all women respond to flowers and romance and never respond to darkness and violence? Or sex, for that matter.
Anyway, I wrote a letter to the editor at the NYTimes that I hope gets published. It went a little something like this:
I’m a 31 year old woman and a sci-fi/fantasy fan since I was a little girl. I’m a huge fan of sci-fi like Star Trek, Fringe, and Doctor Who, fantasy like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the ultimate sci-fi/fantasy blend that is Star Wars, and I write for several websites including PinkRaygun.com, which is a geeky site that caters specifically to women. All the fans of Game of Thrones that I know are female. It saddens me that a female reviewer would paint all women with the same brush. “I can honestly say that I have never met a single woman who…” Ms Bellafante clearly has a homogeneous group of friends! Most people do. Doesn’t mean she should sell limited experience as fact. Why has she never met such a woman? Because those women start their OWN book clubs where reading SFF is par for the course!

Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions about them. Don’t cheat!
1. Doctor Who
2. Fringe
3. Glee
4. Castle
5. Torchwood
NOTE: I totally limited this to shows currently on the air, FYI. Also, this has nothing to do with gender in pop culture (though some of the questions relate), but I never met an internet survey meme I didn’t like!
Who is your favourite character in 2?
Olivia Fucking Dunham in all her incarnations. She’s one of the most amazing characters on television, period, let alone an incredibly nuanced, powerful female character. And Anna Torv can do no wrong - from playing multiple versions of the same character to channelling Leonard Nimoy…she is made of win.
Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Ever? The First Doctor. With all due respect to William Hartnell, the First Doctor was a DOUCHEBAG.
.
What’s your favourite episode of 4?
I haven’t been able to watch much of Season 3 since I wrote a spec script for Castle, but the ep that sticks out to me most is the steampunk episode…not necessarily for the story, but because it was a direct result of a fan/reviewer request. :) That kind of shit always makes me happy. Oh, and the one where Beckett did a Russian accent and Castle played poker against the Russian mob. Yeah, that one. :)
What is your favourite season on 5?
The third. Children of Earth. Definitely and without question. Frightening, unsettling, well-acted (even by John Barrowman, who usually lets the coat act for him), well-written. Awesome television.
What’s your favourite ship in 3?
I want to say Kurt and Blaine, but the ship I really love is Tina and Mike. Because The Asians are dating each other. SHOCKING! :) I wish their characters/relationship would be explored more…
Who is your anti-ship in 2?
Peter and Fauxlivia. Fuck that bitch. :) Except now she’s his babymama. Uh-oh…
How long have you watched 1?
For maybe about three years? Borrowed the Eccleston episodes from a friend and was hooked ever since. Now, there are only 3 Doctors whose episodes I’ve never seen. :) I’M WORKING ON IT!
How did you become interested in 3?
Once I saw the ads and looked into what it was about, I was hooked from before the first episode aired. I WAS a gleek in high school, and I was thrilled that this particular subculture of the high school ecosystem was getting attention.
Who is your favourite actor in 4?
I know I should say Nathan Fillion or Stana Katic, but I have to say Molly Quinn. I just completely believe that Alexis really IS that together. Quinn makes her feel lived-in and real, and not like a “precocious TV teenager.” That’s hard to do, and she nails it. :)
Which show do you prefer out of 1, 2, or 5?
Argh, if you would’ve asked me this question last year, it would’ve been Doctor Who without question. But the third season of Fringe has been SO GOOD that I have to consider them tied. Then again, I went to the NYC advance screening of the first 2 eps of series 6 of Who, and that BLEW ME AWAY. So yeah, they’re neck and neck depending on the week.
And Torchwood is third. :)
Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
Doctor Who. Do you know how LONG that show’s been around??
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Oh, Beckett. Definitely. She’s a crazy-good detective, she’s funny, she’s gorgeous, and she apparently knows a lot about the kink scene. :)
How would you kill off your favourite character in 1?
I don’t know how Amy would die, but I’d definitely have her die in Rory’s arms. I love those two together. :)
Give a random quote from 1.
Cathy: “What’s good about sad?”
Sally Sparrow: “It’s happy for deep people.”
- from the Series 3 episode, “Blink”
Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Well, Fringe DID do that semi-musical episode that one time… I’d love it if someone like Artie got an internship and got to shadow Astrid. :)
Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
I really wished that the Third Doctor and Liz would’ve been more of a thing. They were flirting like hell with their eyes, and she was the first companion that was actually an intellectual match for The Doctor. (Well, as much as a human can be)
Has 5 inspired you in any way?
Actually, yes. I love how Torchwood puts ordinary people in extraordinary positions, and has them come through with flying colors. I would like to think I’d be as awesome as Lois Ibiba. :)
Overall, which show has a better cast, 3 or 5?
Oh, Torchwood, definitely. Glee has a great cast, but while they’re more uniformally good at singing, that’s less true acting-wise. Torchwood has better actors across the board, even down to their guest stars.
Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?
Fringe, in that it actually has a theme song! Also, their different opening credits for our universe/alternate universe are awesome.
