“While the entire cast of ‘Fringe’ is exceptional and one of the best currently on air, Torv deserves individual recognition for her work as Olivia Dunham — all six versions of Olivia Dunham. Over the course of the show’s four seasons, Torv has portrayed six incarnations of Olivia, giving each distinct characteristics.[…] All of the Olivias have traits in common; they are smart, talented, determined, and members of the Fringe division. Although they have similarities, Anna Torv has made sure to give each new version of Olivia distinctive characteristics, making each Olivia distinguishable from the other. No other actor on television has had the chance to deconstruct and recreate her character six times. Torv’s ability to make subtle tweaks and deliver interesting versions of Olivia astounds me. […] The range, the depth, and the quality of her work can been seen episode after episode, season after season. Torv is one of the best actors currently on television. The lack of praise and awards baffles me and is a situation that needs to be remedied soon.”

She is the best female character on television right now, played by the best actress. Period.

- Anna Torv: Why Haven’t They Given Her an Emmy Already?

Answer: The Emmys hate science fiction. Also, this article doesn’t even count the times Olivia’s body has been possessed by Nick Lane and William Bell. So, make that 8 incarnations of Olivia.

Nothing to Do With Gender, Everything to Do With TV

Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions about them. Don’t cheat!

1. Doctor Who
2. Fringe
3. Glee
4. Castle
5. Torchwood

NOTE: I totally limited this to shows currently on the air, FYI. Also, this has nothing to do with gender in pop culture (though some of the questions relate), but I never met an internet survey meme I didn’t like!

Who is your favourite character in 2?

Olivia Fucking Dunham in all her incarnations. She’s one of the most amazing characters on television, period, let alone an incredibly nuanced, powerful female character. And Anna Torv can do no wrong - from playing multiple versions of the same character to channelling Leonard Nimoy…she is made of win.

Who is your least favourite character in 1?

Ever? The First Doctor. With all due respect to William Hartnell, the First Doctor was a DOUCHEBAG.
.
What’s your favourite episode of 4?

I haven’t been able to watch much of Season 3 since I wrote a spec script for Castle, but the ep that sticks out to me most is the steampunk episode…not necessarily for the story, but because it was a direct result of a fan/reviewer request. :) That kind of shit always makes me happy. Oh, and the one where Beckett did a Russian accent and Castle played poker against the Russian mob. Yeah, that one. :)

What is your favourite season on 5?

The third. Children of Earth. Definitely and without question. Frightening, unsettling, well-acted (even by John Barrowman, who usually lets the coat act for him), well-written. Awesome television.

What’s your favourite ship in 3?

I want to say Kurt and Blaine, but the ship I really love is Tina and Mike. Because The Asians are dating each other. SHOCKING! :) I wish their characters/relationship would be explored more…

Who is your anti-ship in 2?

Peter and Fauxlivia. Fuck that bitch. :) Except now she’s his babymama. Uh-oh…

How long have you watched 1?

For maybe about three years? Borrowed the Eccleston episodes from a friend and was hooked ever since. Now, there are only 3 Doctors whose episodes I’ve never seen. :) I’M WORKING ON IT!

How did you become interested in 3?

Once I saw the ads and looked into what it was about, I was hooked from before the first episode aired. I WAS a gleek in high school, and I was thrilled that this particular subculture of the high school ecosystem was getting attention.

Who is your favourite actor in 4?

I know I should say Nathan Fillion or Stana Katic, but I have to say Molly Quinn. I just completely believe that Alexis really IS that together. Quinn makes her feel lived-in and real, and not like a “precocious TV teenager.” That’s hard to do, and she nails it. :)

Which show do you prefer out of 1, 2, or 5?

Argh, if you would’ve asked me this question last year, it would’ve been Doctor Who without question. But the third season of Fringe has been SO GOOD that I have to consider them tied. Then again, I went to the NYC advance screening of the first 2 eps of series 6 of Who, and that BLEW ME AWAY. So yeah, they’re neck and neck depending on the week.

And Torchwood is third. :)

Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?

Doctor Who. Do you know how LONG that show’s been around??

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

Oh, Beckett. Definitely. She’s a crazy-good detective, she’s funny, she’s gorgeous, and she apparently knows a lot about the kink scene. :)

How would you kill off your favourite character in 1?

I don’t know how Amy would die, but I’d definitely have her die in Rory’s arms. I love those two together. :)

Give a random quote from 1.

Cathy: “What’s good about sad?”
Sally Sparrow: “It’s happy for deep people.”

- from the Series 3 episode, “Blink”

Would a 3/4 crossover work?

Well, Fringe DID do that semi-musical episode that one time… I’d love it if someone like Artie got an internship and got to shadow Astrid. :)

Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.

I really wished that the Third Doctor and Liz would’ve been more of a thing. They were flirting like hell with their eyes, and she was the first companion that was actually an intellectual match for The Doctor. (Well, as much as a human can be)

Has 5 inspired you in any way?

Actually, yes. I love how Torchwood puts ordinary people in extraordinary positions, and has them come through with flying colors. I would like to think I’d be as awesome as Lois Ibiba. :)

Overall, which show has a better cast, 3 or 5?

Oh, Torchwood, definitely. Glee has a great cast, but while they’re more uniformally good at singing, that’s less true acting-wise. Torchwood has better actors across the board, even down to their guest stars.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?

Fringe, in that it actually has a theme song! Also, their different opening credits for our universe/alternate universe are awesome.
